School and Classroom Policies

Absences and Tardies

If your child is absent and you want their work, please email me by noon that day. I will do my best to leave work in their cubby or send it with a sibling in another grade. Otherwise your child can get the work when he/she comes back. Please always check the calendar for any assignments.

Absences and tardies require written excuses for New York State. I have included an excuse note for your convenience. You may copy it as you need it, or you may write your own note or email me. If you use your own, please include your child's name, the date(s) they were absent, the reason why. If you send in a note, please sign it. If you email me to let me know about an absence or early dismissal, please make sure to also copy it to Samantha Keathley ( at the school office.

If your child comes in late, please sign them in at the office and include a reason. "Late" means not in our classroom by 7:55am.

On days when your child will be absent or tardy, please notify the school office by 9am, either by phone (434-6051) or email (

Legal Absences:
These are absences that are considered legal by the State of New York:

  • sickness
  • sickness or death in the family
  • attendance at health clinics (ie: dr. offices)
  • required to be in court
  • quarantine

    Prearranged Absences:

If you know ahead of time that your child will be missing school, please get a green "Prearranged Absence" form from the office or online. You will need to fill it out and submit it to me or the office. This needs to be done at least THREE DAYS before your child will be absent.

    Drop-Off and Dismissal

LCS asks that when you drop off your child in the morning, please drive around the building and drop them off by the stairs instead of at the horseshoe driveway. This way you will not cause traffic to back up into Rt. 9.

To pick up your child, come into the school and sign them out on the sheet at the Welcome (front) Desk. Then your child will be paged to come up to the front of the school. Please do not go to the classroom to get your child. If you need to go past the lobby at dismissal, you have to take a Parent Pass, then return it after you've picked up your child. Passes are located near the Sign Out Sheet.

    Early Dismissal

Please let me know if your child will be leaving early. The school office and I need to know when and why for NY State attendance records. I have included an early dismissal note below for your convenience. You may copy this as you need it, or you may write your own note. If you use your own, please include your child's name, the date and time that they are leaving early, the reason why, and your signature. If you email me to let me know about an absence or early dismissal, please make sure to also copy it to Samantha Keathley ( at the school office.

    Change in Dismissal

Please send in a note (or email me) if there is any change from your child's regular dismissal routine. This is for safety reasons. If you email me and I don't reply, please call the school office to make sure I know, in case I'm not able to check my email before the end of the day.

    Emergency Form

Please fill out the LCS Emergency Form and hand it in ASAP. This is very important. This was sent home over the summer, but if you need another one, please contact the school office. This needs to be kept up-to-date, so your child will be able to attend field trips and participate in recess, gym, and sports.

    Health Office

Students aren't able to get any medicine from the health office, including over-the-counter medications, without parental and doctor consent. You will need to get a form for this from the health office or else it's online. Please fill it out and return it to the health office. This needs to be kept up-to-date (for allergies, etc.), so your child will be able to attend field trips or participate in recess, gym, and sports. If you think your child needs cough drops, please send in a note with cough drops and I will allow your child to take some.

Per school policy, PLEASE do not send your child to school if they are sick, especially if they have a fever or have been vomiting (they will be sent home). When your child is fever-free for 24 hours without medicine, they may return to school. This applies to vomiting as well: please wait 24 hours from when they last vomited before sending them to back to school.

I do not give homework unless I feel it's important for your child's understanding. I want homework to help your child succeed, not waste their time (or yours).

Homework assignments for the day will be written on the board in the classroom for the students to copy into their student planners. It will also be on the online calendar. All homework should be done neatly, on time, and be fully completed. Sloppy work will need to be redone.

Homework that is not turned in on time will have 20 points taken off the final score. The work needs to be handed in the next day. If it is not, it will be a zero.

Any test or quiz grade that is below an 80% must be signed by a parent and returned to school the next day (except for math). Please do not just sign and return the test. Go over it with your child so you can help them see and understand what they did wrong, so they won't repeat the mistakes. Students often repeat their mistakes, not just with the content. For example, they might have trouble reading directions or memorizing spelling words, so it would be good to go over those things with your child. For math tests or quizzes, since the students have to correct it and have a week in which to do so, just signed it by the time they hand in the corrected test or quiz.

It would be very helpful for you to go over all tests and quizzes with your child. Look at anything they got wrong, even if the grade wasn't low. This can help them avoid the same kinds of mistakes in the future.

    Dress Code

Read the LCS Dress Code policy.

LCS policy: students are not allowed to use their cell phones, iPods, iPads, laptops, MP3 players, video games, and all other electronics during school hours: 8:00am Ė 3:05pm. These cannot be out or even on during the day. If they are seen, I will take the item until the end of the day and it will be given to Mr. Calkins. Students may use a cell phone after school during homeroom with teacher permission. If you need to contact your child during school hours, please call the main office at 434-6051. This is very important, since there are serious consequences for violating the school's policy. Please make sure to read Personal Technology in the LCS Parent/Student Handbook. (Scroll down until you get to that section on the page linked.)

    Lunch and Snack

Your child is able to have milk at lunch as part of the LCS tuition. There are two choices: 1% white or low-fat chocolate milk. You already received and returned a note with your child's preference (or yours). The milk choice can change, however it wonít go into effect until the next time milk is ordered. If, at any time during the year, your child wants a change, please send in a note or email me, indicating the change. The changes will take place at the beginning of the next month.

I do not require the students to drink milk, however if they donít have milk, please include a drink with your childís lunch. Consistent with the other elementary grades, soda is not permitted for either lunch or snack (except on party days).

I strongly recommend that your child has a water bottle to keep on their desk throughout the day. It must only contain water and must be able to completely close (this is in case of spills which have happened several times; water does a lot less damage to supplies and is a lot easier to clean up than other beverages).

Please make sure your child has a healthy snack for our snack time (no dessert or candy).

In order to chaperone field trips, the school needs to clear you as a driver. In order to do this, you must fill out a Volunteer Driver Application Packet (application, chaperone instructions, background screening). You may pick up one from the school office, or get it online.

In addition to filling out the form, you must attach a copy of your driver's license and current vehicle insurance card.

If you have already been cleared, you don't need to fill out a new form every year, but make sure the office has a current copy of your insurance card (which, as you know, expires every 6 months) and your driver's license.

Please do this as soon as possible because it takes some time for it to be processed and this way you'll be all set to drive when needed. Thanks!
